An alumnus of Puyallup Washington Butler was interested in the arts while growing up. She was a stage performer and in school. The actress moved from Los Angeles to study theatre at the University of Southern California and later, she played Belle the princess in Beauty and the Beast for about a year in Disneyland. After dropping out of school in the spring of 2008, she started looking for a talent agency and trying out for work in television and film. Butler played a part in the TV show CSI: Miami. The web series Luke 11-17, directed by Don Stark, featured her in a character. Butler was also a regular appearance for the web series I Love Vampires. Butler was cast as the main character in I Spit on Your Grave (a remake) a 2010 revenge and rape thriller. The film was initially a turn-off for her because it was awash in violence, nudity as well as female subtexts. But the compelling storyline and feminist element led her to agree to the lead role. Steven R. Monroe, the director of this film made it available on the 8th of October 2010. In November of 2011, Butler as well as Estella Warren began filming the thriller based on psychological research The Stranger Within in Mallorca the Spanish island of Mallorca.
